Piano Lesson via Skype

Jeffrey Biegel has discovered distance learning with the help of skype.

My own take is that at best this is an excellent tool that can be used within certain limits -technical and musical. My sense is that the art of teaching (and learning) one-on-one in the studio is still best. The communication (spoken and unspoken), immediacy, and the entire practicable field of perception is much greater. What say you? Still it has a place -and can be an important tool.

Thanks for posting this. I just gave an hour lesson on Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata, second movement. I was able to fix the quality of sound, rhythms, tempi, arm movements, pedaling--everything as if we were in the same studio. And saved the student an expensive airline ticket!

You welcome and it does indeed sound like an interesting endeavor. Do you have a website/blog for the project? I would be happy to link back to it.

There are some You Tube links for Skype teaching. If you go to You Tube and type my name, there should be a testimonial, and two videos with 'Matt' and one with 'Sam'.
Thanks much!

I haven't used it yet but plan on doing so as more students request it.

Do you have any problem in sound if I take lesson via skype? I mean sound clear or not.

Sound is quite good--I can tell if the sound is singing or harsh also, synamics, etc. The arm, wrist, elbows, fingering, phrasing--no problems. I see no barriers as a teacher.

I just stumbled across your blog while searching to see if it were possible to do piano lessons via skype. We are about to embark on a series of skype lessons on the violin for my younger, beginner son, which I expect will be fairly easy to do, but I wondered whether piano was really possible.

We're in the process of trying to find a new piano teacher for my eldest son, and haven't found anyone entirely satisfactory so far in our own city, so this may be a real possibility. Thanks to you and your other commenters for the encouragement!

Its interesting to know that through skype and other modern internet tools, one can learn distantly. No need to personally travel for private or class lessons. One important consideration is to make sure you have fast internet connection to avoid lags.
